Tweaking the Read More Tweak

Bashful

Drupal's got a funny quirk when it comes to the "Read more" link it places after node teasers: the link hides, all shy-like, among other links below the teaser. "Aw, shucks, if you really want to read more... I mean, gawrsh, don't go out of your way or nothin'..."

Bah! I want that link to throttle the reader and demand that he read more! That he read it all! I'M WATCHING!

Comes the Read More Tweak module to the rescue. This nifty tool will obligingly boot the "Read more" link up into its own line, or inline with the end of the teaser, and even allow quick customization of its text and appearance. The result: a custom link with all the neck-throttling visibility you could want.

Alas, one trouble: the silly thing was causing a nicely-custom "Read more" link to appear even when there was no more text to read – i.e., when the teaser was already displaying the whole of the node. (At least in my Drupal 6 sites.) Visitors eagerly clicking on the link for more literary magic got a big rude nothing instead.

Luckily, a blessed soul offers a patch for the 6.x-3.x-dev 2008-Aug-14 version of the module, which is what I had installed. And if applying a module patch scares you, the good Drupal community has you covered there too, with general discussions like this one, and even platform-specific discussions like this one for Mac OS X. Patching the module took me just seconds. And the results... Well, just check the main page for yourself. Links when there's more content, no links when there isn't.

Ah, another to-do done! Like filling in one more numbered space on a paint-by-numbers mural... one the size of an aircraft hangar. Next up...

UPDATE: Well, so much for all the above. I foolishly upgraded Read More Tweak along with a number of modules, forgetting that my version was patched. The new version restores the old broken behavior. Gotta look into a new patch now... : (

Lessons:

  • Take careful note of any module that has been specially tweaked and should not be upgraded without precautions.
  • Keep a copy of the old version of any module when upgrading. You just might need to go back to it.

As for me I like it a lot! The name Drupaloid is very cool. As for me I like Drupal at all. There are a lot of information about it. So any question that appear in my head has an answer which is easy to find. By the way I found nice Drupal books at rapidshare SE http://rapidpedia.com .

upgraded read more module

Submitted by Joe Hudson (not verified) on Mon, 2009-08-17 03:26.

Hey,

For anyone who's interested I made some improvements to this read more tweak module, that allow sending the user to the new bit of content when the new page loads, so they don't have to scrole down, and also for customizing the system generated read more link, without replacing it. Maybe I'll add ajax full view loading next.. You can download the modified module here:

and see it in action here:

Read More module

Submitted by Drupalace on Tue, 2009-08-25 14:22.

Nice clean site design. Good luck with the book promotion!

Anyone using Read More should check out your improved version (first on a test site, of course). Are the changes submitted to the module maintainer?

I probably would have jumped at it not long ago, though after many hassles with teasers, right now I want to leave well enough alone (at least for this site). I may have chance to test it out on another site soon. Thanks for the message!

Site visitors seeing your ugly error messages on the screen (along with details of your Drupal installation path)? Once your site goes from dev to launch, you probably want to have errors recorded in the log but not splashed across the screen. Head to the handy Error Reporting settings found at admin/settings/error-reporting.
