Want a quick redirect, without manhandling system files? Just use the core Path module: on the "URL aliases" form (/admin/build/path), complete 'Path alias' with the path you expect visitors to use, and complete 'Existing system path' with the path you'd like to send them. 'Path alias' can be an existing system path; Drupal will still treat it as an alias and send visitors to your specified path.

Free Acquia hosting for Drupal non-profit sites
Drupal creator Dries Buytaert announced a generous offer from his company, Acquia:
Today, we are happy to announce that we'll start to provide free Acquia Hosting accounts to not for profit sites dedicated to promoting the adoption and usage of Drupal. For example, DrupalCamp websites and local Drupal user group websites would qualify for free Acquia Hosting. The program starts in October or November, but you can sign-up now if you have a site that qualifies.
Can't beat that! Check the announcement for details.
Unlimited disk and transfer offer - going fast!
Bleah, this looks spammy, but I wanted to pass along something I noted with surprise: Poking around my hosting provider's site, I saw a special 11th birthday offer: The first 1,111 new customers to sign up with DreamHost get unlimited disk space and data transfer for hosting, forever.
I wouldn't be surprised if that "unlimited" came with a "within the limits of reasonable usage" clause. But that's pretty normal for any host, and for as little as $5.95/mo, it's sounding good to me. I've been happy with DreamHost for my sites (granted, they're not high-traffic sites calling for high-end hosting), and am particularly happy with their standard allowance of unlimited MySQL databases, a must for the Drupal experimenter.
Want to know more about DH, both good and bad? See my review.
DH link: Get Drupal-friendly hosting (with unlimited MySQL databses) at DreamHost
Disclaimer: Yes, that link generates a modest referral fee for this site, which helps pay me own bills. Use the promo code 49ER if you like, and $49 of that fee goes to you (as savings) instead of me. Go ahead and use it; if you're happy, I'll be happy too.
Oof! Hit by bad_httpd_conf error
Sorry to would-be readers who saw Site Temporarily Unavailable error id: "bad_httpd_conf" for an inderminate number of hours. "Now what?", I wailed...
Fortunately, this was easy to fix. It's not a Drupal thing (whew!), as spidersilk points out here. It's a glitch chez Dreamhost, which the ISP addresses in their support wiki. Calling up and re-setting my domain hosting settings fixed things within minutes.

If you're making web sites, you need a server to dish up those sites. You need hosting.
For anyone pondering the difficult choice of hosting services, allow me to write a few words on those that I've used with Drupal. Some caveats for you to keep in mind:
