Catching up

Ack! Much traveling of late, and way behind on replying to comments (and posting stuff, and cleaning spam, and doing anything at all).

Caught up on a few comments now; away for a few more days, then will try to catch up on all comments.

Thanks for visiting! Really!

"Promote your Site" page online!

News!

New in the Drupal Ace SEO, Traffic and Revenue Diary (proper name to follow soon!) is a key article: Promote your Site. It's a big list of ways to get your site's name out there to the world, from directories to commenting to RSS to pings.

Much of it will be elementary to webmasters with any experience at all, but it's useful to gather the techniques into lists, and the added bits of Drupal-specific info may interest readers here. Take a look! (And leave comments there to let me know what I've missed, or where I'm all wrong.)

Many more pages to come at the Diary. Keep visiting!

Scraping the mold off of EDAM

Submitted by Drupalace on Mon, 2008-08-18 16:54
  • site

All right there! I still have to add some new content, but I've carved a little of the hoary green rind from EDAM, the Easy Drupal Admin Manual. (Don't you hate blue cheese that isn't supposed to be blue!?)

Changes:

  1. The Drupalace Curse appears to have once again sucked a page into the netherworld. The page Creating Links had disappeared, part and parcel, from site and from DB, for no reason that I can discern. Like so many pages before it. (This happens to me only on this site.) It's now restored, thanks to my demon-fighting arsenal of backups.
  2. I fixed a bunch of internal links inside EDAM. All pages should now begin with the path EDAM. Please let me know if you see a broken link inside!
  3. Fixed a few more confusing mentions of "page" vs "Page".

Now, how to find and plug this interdimensional vortex that eats my nodes?

And what to do with this pile of smelly mold shavings?

Uh oh! Internet Explorer alert!

Most Benevolent Reader GreenLED informs me that this site is showing major visual bugs in Internet Explorer. Aaargh, I had hoped I was immune to that curse...

I don't have a ready means to test my output in Internet Explorer, having no Windows computer. Alas, it looks like I'll need to use virtualization software in my upcoming MacBook Pro purchase, just for the purpose of testing sites on IE.

Oof! Hit by bad_httpd_conf error

Sorry to would-be readers who saw Site Temporarily Unavailable error id: "bad_httpd_conf" for an inderminate number of hours. "Now what?", I wailed...

Fortunately, this was easy to fix. It's not a Drupal thing (whew!), as spidersilk points out here. It's a glitch chez Dreamhost, which the ISP addresses in their support wiki. Calling up and re-setting my domain hosting settings fixed things within minutes.

Drupal mini tip

Need to disable a Drupal module but can't do so from within the site? (This could happen if the wayward module is preventing you from reaching the Modules form!) Look for the module's entry within the "system" table of the site's database, and set the module's status to "0".

(From within phpMyAdmin: Select the "system" table from the column of tables at left. Click the "Browse" tab. Find the row for the module you wish to disable, and click the "pencil" icon in that row. In the resulting form, input "0" for the Value of "status", and click the "Go" button. Done!)
